SEO vs. AEO: How Financial Advisors Can Show Up Where AI Is Giving the Answers

If you're building a pipeline from online marketing, SEO has probably been part of your strategy for a while — it's how people find you organically when they're Googling retirement questions, tax strategies, or whether they need a financial advisor at all. Now, with AI tools handling more of that search behavior, advisors are asking a new question: how do you stay visible when the answer comes from an AI tool instead of a list of links?

That's what Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) addresses, and it's becoming a real part of financial advisor marketing alongside SEO — not instead of it.

What Is AEO, and How Is It Different from SEO?

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI tools can confidently use your explanation as the answer to a question. If SEO is about being found, AEO is about being quoted.

SEO is still essential — organic search remains one of the largest sources of website traffic. But research from SparkToro puts the overall zero-click rate at roughly 60% of Google searches, rising to around 80% when an AI Overview appears in the results. In other words, a meaningful share of the people asking questions you could answer never see a list of blue links at all. They see a direct answer, and that answer either comes from your firm or from a competitor's.

From my own perspective — having worked as an advisor before moving into marketing strategy — I don't see AEO as a replacement for SEO. It's a natural extension of it. The purpose of SEO has always been to help people find reliable, useful information quickly. AI tools are trying to do the same thing, just in a more conversational format. Most of what already makes your SEO strong — helpful content, real answers to real client questions, clear explanations — also helps your AEO. The difference is that AEO asks you to think more specifically about how people phrase questions and how directly you answer them.

SEO vs. AEO: The Key Differences

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is about improving your visibility in traditional search results. It covers keyword research, page titles and meta descriptions, internal linking and site structure, backlinks, and technical fundamentals like site speed and mobile usability. Success is generally measured by organic traffic, keyword rankings, and domain authority. The goal is to rank well and bring people to your website.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about helping AI tools use your content as the answer itself. That means prioritizing clear, concise, authoritative responses to specific questions; writing in a conversational, voice-friendly way rather than in keyword phrases; using structured data and schema so machines can parse what your content is answering; and aiming for strong "zero-click" visibility — featured snippets and AI overviews that surface your insight even when no one clicks through.

The short version: SEO tries to rank pages. AEO tries to answer questions. Both depend on the quality of your answer and the authority behind it.

Why AEO Matters Specifically for Financial Advisor Marketing

Online marketing is fundamentally about building trust before a prospect ever picks up the phone, and that process often starts before they land on your website at all. If you're the source that answers a question well, you've already started building that trust.

A few reasons this matters more for advisors than it might for other businesses:

You show up at high-intent moments. When someone asks "Should I roll over my 401(k)?" or "How much can I safely withdraw in retirement?", they're not casually browsing — they're actively working through a decision. Appearing in that answer puts you in front of them at exactly the right moment.

There's a credibility effect. When an AI tool selects your explanation as the answer to a question, it implicitly signals that your content is trustworthy, without you having to say so yourself.

Voice search keeps growing, and content written the way a person would actually speak is more likely to be picked up by voice assistants and conversational AI tools than content written primarily for keyword density.

This is a structural shift, not a passing trend. AI-powered search isn't going away, and advisors who adapt early will have a real head start over those who wait.

How to Optimize for AEO While Strengthening Your SEO

Start with real questions, not just keywords. The best source is your own client meetings — the "how," "what," "why," and "should I" questions people actually ask you. Tools like Ahrefs or Semrush can help you find high-volume versions of those same questions if you want to validate demand.

Lead with the answer. Put a short, direct answer — about 40 to 60 words — immediately after each heading, then expand with context and nuance. Think "here's the answer, now let me explain," rather than building up to the answer over several paragraphs.

Use clear structure and basic schema. FAQ sections, straightforward headings, and schema markup make it easier for AI tools to understand what a page is answering. Most website platforms support this natively, or your web developer can help set it up.

Keep your SEO fundamentals strong. AEO sits on top of authority. Backlinks, reviews, accurate business listings, and consistent branding across the web all still matter — AI engines tend to trust the same sources that traditional search already trusts.

Write the way you'd speak to a client. If a sentence wouldn't come out of your mouth naturally in a meeting, rewrite it. This also happens to align well with how people phrase voice search queries.

Strengthen your third-party profiles. AI tools often pull information from credentialing bodies like the CFP Board and from professional directories. Make sure those profiles are current, complete, and clearly describe who you serve.

Refresh content regularly. Updating older posts, refreshing statistics, and breaking long articles into clear question-and-answer sections signals relevance to both readers and AI systems.

Measure differently. AEO success doesn't always show up as a traffic spike. Watch impressions and featured snippet appearances, and ask new clients how they found you — you'll start hearing "I asked Google" or "I asked ChatGPT" more often as this shifts.

SEO and AEO Work Best Together

Advisors who win online generally aren't choosing between SEO or AEO — they're doing both. Strong, helpful content still matters, and now it also needs to be structured so AI tools can extract and deliver it. Whether someone types "financial advisor near me" or asks their phone "How do I choose a fiduciary advisor?", the goal is the same: to be present in both moments.

SEO helps people find your website. AEO helps people find your expertise. Advisors who focus on clear answers, real questions, and language that sounds like an actual person will stay visible as this shift continues.

The Bottom Line

Many advisors already have most of what AEO requires — real expertise and a track record of answering client questions clearly. What's usually missing is a deliberate strategy connecting content, positioning, and technical structure into one system, rather than a handful of disconnected blog posts and vendor tools. As a former advisor now working in marketing leadership, that's the gap I help firms close.
