AI Search Optimization for Advisors: GEO vs. AEO Explained

AI Visibility - GEO vs. AEO Explained for Financial Advisors

GEO and AEO are two different jobs, and they are not interchangeable. Generative engine optimization (GEO) gets your content quoted inside AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Answer engine optimization (AEO) gets it into Google’s featured snippets and AI Overviews.

You review markets for clients every quarter. Nobody reviews how ChatGPT describes your practice unless you do.

By the end of this guide you can tell which of the two to start with, follow 5 steps to optimize for it, and check each month whether ChatGPT and Google name your firm.

What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini cite it directly in generated answers.

The term comes from a 2023 paper by researchers including those from Princeton and Georgia Tech, later published at KDD 2024 (Aggarwal et al., “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” arXiv:2311.09735). According to that paper, its optimization methods can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

Read “up to” as a best case from a research paper. It is not a forecast for any one advisor’s website.

On your own site, GEO work looks plain. State who you serve, where, and how you work, in sentences a model can lift whole, and name the source behind every claim.

Try it today. Ask ChatGPT the question your best client would ask before hiring you, and write down which firms it names.

You will also see LLMO (LLM optimization) used for similar work. Treat it as a neighboring term, not a synonym, and ask any vendor who uses it to define it in writing.

GEO is about being the source an AI model quotes, not the link a search engine ranks.

What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content to win featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice search answers, and Google’s AI Overviews.

The audience for those answers is growing. According to Pew Research Center’s “Americans and AI 2026” report (June 17, 2026), roughly half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024. That figure covers all U.S. adults, not only people shopping for an advisor.

Search pages are changing too. In Pew’s “Metered Data: AI” report (May 23, 2025), at least one search produced an AI-generated summary alongside regular results for 58% of respondents in March 2025.

Take a fictional Tampa advisor, Alex Example. A prospect asks, “Who’s a good financial advisor for a physician nearing retirement in Tampa?” Alex needs AEO for the answer box on Google, plus the groundwork for getting recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.

Without a page that answers that exact question in its first sentence, neither system has anything to quote.

The simplest start is one page. Put the prospect’s question in a heading, then answer it in the first sentence underneath.

AEO targets the search results page. GEO targets the conversation inside the AI tool.

GEO vs. AEO: What Is the Difference for Advisors?

GEO and AEO differ in where an advisor shows up and how the AI tool decides what to cite. The table puts the two side by side.

Comparison of GEO and AEO for financial advisors
GEO AEO
Target The answer an AI tool generates in a conversation The answer box on the search results page
Primary tools ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini Google featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice search, AI Overviews
What wins a citation Clear, specific, sourced statements a model can quote A direct answer in the first sentence under a question-style heading
Measurement Ask the tools your prospects' questions on a schedule and log whether your firm is named Impressions and queries in Google Search Console, plus snippet appearances

Both disciplines reward the same raw material: a page that states one clear answer, backed by a named and dated source. The difference is where you check the result.

The mechanics of SEO versus AEO for advisors differ, and a page built only for Google’s traditional rankings can read poorly to an AI model scanning for a direct answer.

An advisor with one website and one compliance reviewer needs both, because the same prospect can ask Google or ask ChatGPT the same question.

GEO vs. AEO: Which Should Financial Advisors Prioritize?

A solo advisor or small team should start with AEO, then layer in GEO once the foundational content exists.

The field is crowded. A prospect looking for an advisor faces a long list of firms, which makes being the cited answer worth more than being one more result.

Three questions decide where you start:

  • Content maturity. If your site has no page that answers a prospect’s question in its first sentence, start there. That is AEO work, and it produces the pages GEO later draws from.

  • Firm size. A solo advisor has one site and one compliance reviewer, so one well-built answer page costs less than a new channel. A team of five with a content calendar can run GEO checks beside it.

  • Time budget. As an illustration with round numbers: with two hours a month, spend 100 minutes improving pages and 20 minutes checking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google for your prospects’ questions, then log who gets named.

AEO builds the structured content GEO later depends on.

How to Optimize for GEO and AEO: 5 Steps for Advisors

You can optimize for GEO and AEO in 5 steps, and none of them needs code or a new tool. Do them in order, one page at a time.

  1. Pick one question a prospect would type. Start with the one your best client asked before hiring you, such as “Who’s a good financial advisor for a physician nearing retirement in Tampa?” One finished page beats a list of 20 questions you never get to.

  2. Answer it in the first sentence under a heading. Put the question in an H2, then answer it in about 40 words. Answer boxes quote a page’s direct answer, so this step carries most of your AEO work.

  3. State who you are in plain text. Type your name, credentials, niche, and city as words on the page, not inside a graphic. Write CFP® with the mark, and link your LinkedIn profile on every page.

  4. Name the source behind every number. Put the publisher and the year in the same sentence as the figure. A sourced statement is easier for an AI tool to quote and for a prospect to trust.

  5. Date the page and refresh it every 90 days. Show a visible “Last updated” date, and recheck each number once a quarter.

Steps 1 and 2 are mostly AEO. Steps 3 to 5 are mostly GEO.

The deep work, such as rewriting a whole site or fixing technical errors, needs an expert. Hand it to your web vendor or a marketing specialist, and send each finished page through your compliance reviewer before it goes live.

GEO and AEO work belong inside a financial advisor marketing plan, not as a side project squeezed in after everything else.

ONE step done this week beats a five-step plan done never.

How to Track Whether ChatGPT and Google Cite Your Firm

Tracking GEO and AEO results takes about 20 minutes a month with no tools, or an automated service if you have a marketing budget. Both versions answer the same question: when a prospect asks, does your firm get named?

Measure AI search visibility separately from clicks. Tracking citations and impressions apart from clicks is one of the financial advisor marketing metrics that show whether AEO or GEO work is paying off.

No-Tools Check: Ask ChatGPT and Google Monthly

A spreadsheet and 20 minutes a month are enough to see whether AI tools name your firm.

  1. Write down 5 questions your prospects ask, such as “best financial advisor for a physician nearing retirement in Tampa.”

  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google. That is 20 checks, at about 1 minute each.

  3. Log every check in a spreadsheet, one row per check, with 5 columns:

→ Date of the check

→ The question

→ The tool

→ Whether your firm was named (yes or no)

→ Which firms were named instead

  1. Open the query data in Google Search Console, Google’s free tool, and look at impressions for the questions your pages answer.

AI tools can answer the same question differently from one day to the next, so one result is one data point. Compare 3 months of rows before you change a page.

AI Visibility Tracking Tools for Bigger Budgets

Paid AI visibility tracking software runs your saved questions on a schedule across several AI tools and logs which firms get named. It fits a firm with a marketing budget and a person who reads the report each month.

The software reports what the AI tools said. It does not fix your pages, and it does not tell you what your compliance reviewer will approve.

No-tools check compared with paid AI visibility tracking tools
No tools Paid tracking tools
Cost Free, plus about 20 minutes a month A monthly subscription, priced by the vendor
Questions covered 5 that you type by hand A saved list the tool runs on a schedule
Best for Solo advisors and small teams Firms with a marketing budget and someone to read the reports
Limit One check is one data point You still decide what to change

My rule of thumb: move from the spreadsheet to software when your question list passes 25 or the monthly check takes more than 1 hour.

Start with the spreadsheet. Add software when the spreadsheet becomes the job.

GEO vs AEO FAQ: Common Questions Financial Advisors Ask

Which Works Better for RIAs: GEO or AEO?

Neither works better in isolation, because RIAs need AEO's structured content as the base GEO draws from. State your credentials in plain text on the page, so a crawler and a prospect both see them.

How Does AI SEO Differ From Traditional Google SEO?

Traditional Google SEO targets a ranked list of links, while AI search optimization targets a single generated answer. SEO asks whether your page ranks. AI search optimization asks whether your sentence gets quoted, in a featured snippet or a Google AI Overview. The page-level work overlaps, so one well-built answer page serves both.

How Can I Tell if ChatGPT Mentions My Firm?

Ask ChatGPT the question your best client would ask, in a new chat, and read which firms it names. Repeat that for 5 questions once a month and log each result in a spreadsheet. Paid tracking software automates the same check if you have the budget.

Will GEO Outlast AEO for Financial Advisors?

Neither outlasts the other alone, because AI chatbots and AI summaries in search results are both now part of how people look for answers. Roughly half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024 (Pew Research Center, "Americans and AI 2026," June 17, 2026), and GEO's optimization methods can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% (Aggarwal et al., arXiv:2311.09735). Build for both, measure separately, and revisit the numbers every quarter as adoption climbs.
